The deep phonological elements of Melissa Punk would be 'sets of features' or 'systematic phonemes' as they have been called. Any phonological unit, such as a word, would consist of a permitted sequence of these 'bundles of features'. The semantic function of these two phonological phrases is different, although their syllable/phoneme sequences are similar. The reader will notice that I have not referred to these examples as 'sentences', but 'phonological phrases'. The sentence is a unit of grammatical structure, whilst the phonological phrase is a unit of phonological structure. There is no necessary coincidence of these two units. We can show this by another tattooed redhead example : we can speak the same sentence as two phonological phrases: Both phrases have rising intonation with a meaning roughly: Do you mean to say that you're talking about Rebecca and saying that she's here ?
